Essential Functions
POSITION SUMMARY:
Using guinea pig as a model for hearing and deafness, we address questions related to how physiologic measurements can be used to understand the causes of hearing loss, for differential diagnosis, for treatment monitoring, and for studying the mechanisms of hearing.
This position assists with the technical aspects of studies and experiments, including data collection and analysis.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists with research studies and experiments, including preparation of solutions, anesthesia, soft tissue surgery, and data collection.
- Maintains detailed notes on experiments.
- Performs data entry and preliminary analyses.
- Maintains and routinely calibrates equipment.
- Assists with maintaining a guinea pig colony.
- Performs histological preparation of inner ear tissue, microscopy, and analyses using software.
- Complies with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
- Assists with general lab management, which can include a broad variety of tasks such as ordering supplies and maintaining drug logs, as well as training future employees and trainees.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and up to one year of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling four years.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with physiology experiments using small animals.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.
- Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
- Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment.
Salary Range
The hiring range for this position is $14.07 - $18.99 per hour.

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.
