Department Name/Job Location This position is in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics. This position is for the Medical School Campus. Essential Functions POSITION SUMMARY: Postdoctoral Research Associate Positions Open in the Garcia Lab (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics). Area of expertise needed for this position include mass spectrometry, analytical chemistry, proteomics and/or chromatin biology. The Garcia Lab is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on projects related to understanding the role of histone modifications in cancer and neurodevelopmental disorders. The Garcia Lab utilizes high-resolution mass spectrometry to explore cellular signaling, epigenetic mechanisms and chromatin regulation. We are especially interested in understanding how protein and nucleic acid modifications mediate their canonical functions and regulate nuclear processes. The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to work with multiple team members, collaborators from multiple institutions and utilize state of the art mass spectrometry instrumentation. In addition to high-quality research facilities, career and professional development training for postdoctoral researchers is provided through the Career Center, Teaching Center, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, and campus groups. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Train under the supervision of a faculty mentor, including (but not limited to): 1. Manage their own project, which should lead to a first author publications, and may train or mentor other younger scientists. 2. Develop expertise in quantitative proteomics, especially for quantifying modified proteins and proteomes. 3. Have an interest in learning cell biology, biochemistry and genomics experiments to complement work in the mass spectrometry based proteomics area. 4. Contribute to the maintenance and operational of mass spectrometry instrumentation and other related equipment. 5. Develop proficiency in career skills, including writing, public speaking, networking, and critical evaluation of scientific literature. 6. Present scientific work both inside and outside the University with excellent oral communication skills. 7. Assist with grant preparation and reporting. 8. Prepare and submit papers on research with excellent writing skills. 9. Design research experiments, data interpretation and statistical analyses. 10. Evaluate research findings and reports results. 11. Maintain conscientious discharge of their research responsibilities. 12. Maintain conformity with ethical standards in research. 13. Maintain compliance with good laboratory practice, including the maintenance of adequate research records and efforts to maintain general lab health and growth. 14. Engage in open and timely discussion with their mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications. 15. Maintain collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group. 16. Adhere to all applicable University policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in University laboratories remain the property of the University. Required Qualifications Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, chemistry or a related discipline with ample experience operating and maintaining high-resolution mass spectrometry and related instrumentation. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated ability to implement laboratory procedures, conduct research and records findings. Salary Range Base pay commensurate with experience.
