Essential Functions


A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Charles Harris in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Lipid Research at Washington University School of Medicine. Work from the laboratory has focused on the mechanism of glucocorticoid action in metabolic disease. This has been done using mouse models with alterations to the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) including tissue specific knockout mice, mice with point mutations in GR that skew downstream GR effector arms. We are now beginning studies on the role of the mineralocorticoid receptor in metabolic syndrome. While the primary site of mineralocorticoid action is the kidney, more recent studies have demonstrated important roles for this receptor in the heart and immune system. We currently have the mouse lines necessary to generate the needed models in order to probe the role of the mineralocorticoid receptor in metabolic disease. Additional studies in the laboratory relate to the role of GR phosphorylation in vivo using mice with GR point mutations in phosphorylated residues. This position will provide an opportunity to use biochemical, pharmacological, molecular and genetic techniques in animals, along with use of cell culture methods.


  1. Assists with grant preparation and reporting.

  4. Evaluates research findings and assists in the reporting of the results.

  5. Conscientious discharge of his/her research responsibilities.

  6. Maintain conformity with ethical standards in research.

  7. Maintain compliance with good laboratory practice including the maintenance of adequate research records

  8. Engage in open and timely discussion with his/her mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.

  9. Collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group.

  10. Adherence to all applicable University policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in University laboratories remain the property of the University.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in biomedical science.
  • Willingness to conduct research using mouse models.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are essential, as evidenced by high-quality international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior research experience in nuclear hormone receptors, glucose or lipid metabolism, or related fields.

Salary Range

The hiring range for this position is commensurate with experience.
