Essential Functions

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position reports to the Biological Safety Officer in the Environmental Health and Safety Department (EHS) of Washington University in St. Louis (WU). This position works closely with key personnel, including the Assistant Vice Chancellor for EHS and EHS staff, the Biological Safety Officer, Departmental Administrators, faculty and staff. This position will be the primary liaison between EHS and OFMD for BSL3 and ABSL3 projects. This position will be the primary point of contact for Biological Safety support of Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3) and Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL3) facilities. The majority of effort will involve facility inspections and development of standard operating procedures and training materials. This position will also work closely with Operations and Facilities Management to provide Biosafety support and oversight of maintenance activities within BSL3 or ABSL3 facilities and interact with regulatory and/or funding agencies during federal, state or local audits/inspections. Decisions made can affect the safety of those working in and around high-containment laboratories. This position will have contact with various levels of management, faculty and staff throughout the University. This position will potentially have contact with various regulatory agencies, including, but not limited to the Division of Select Agents and Toxins (DSAT), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Health and the DOT/IATA/FAA.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide safety and compliance oversight of research in BSL3 and ABSL3 facilities (e.g. inspect facilities, develop standard operating procedures, develop training materials).
  2. Provide Biosafety expertise in support of design, commissioning, maintenance and annual verification of BSL3, ABSL3 or other research facilities.
  3. Provide Biosafety support to the Institutional Biological & Chemical Safety Committee (e.g. protocol review, targeted Biosafety inspections).
  4. Serve as an Alternate Responsible Official and assist the BSO/RO in overseeing the Select Agent Program.
  5. Serve as a member of the BSL3 Emergency Response Team.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in biological sciences.
  • Five years of work experience in research compliance, research administration or BSL3/ABSL3 research environment.
  • Must submit to US Department of Justice Security Risk Assessment and be able to obtain the necessary clearance for select agent work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree.
  • Biosafety professional credentials.
  • Experience working on or with institutional compliance programs and committees (e.g. Institutional Biosafety Committee, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Institutional Review Board-Human Subjects Committee).
  • Familiarity with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules (NIH Guidelines), select agent regulations, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), and other regulations or guidance documents relevant to Biological safety.
  • Demonstrate understanding of a regulatory environment and ability to interpret regulations and institutional policy.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage confidential information, work independently and exercise good judgment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to deal with heavy work volume and deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to be conversant in Biomedical research terminology.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with many levels within the organization.
  • Computer experience in maintaining and working in databases, email systems and websites.

Salary Range

Base pay commensurate with experience.

Applicant Special Instructions

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Potential exposure to chemicals, radioactive materials and potentially infectious materials in a laboratory environment.
  • Will need to wear personal protective equipment during inspections, spill remediation and laboratory decontamination.
  • Will need to carry an on-call (24/7) spill response phone appromixately once a quarter.
  • Occasional lifting >25 pounds.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment physical which includes medical clearance to wear a respirator and receive applicable vaccinations.
