Overview

Functions as a member of a team of professionals to provide veterinary care to research animals. Responsible for daily animal health rounds. Provides routine animal care as prescribed by the Attending Veterinarian. Develops and implements animal care procedures and policies. Interfaces with investigators and researchers to resolve problems related to animal health or welfare. Facilitates research activities of scientific personnel by providing routine orientation for new users of the facility and assisting other users with veterinary services or information. Works with the Attending Veterinarian to ensure appropriate treatments, procedure, records, and reports. Works collaboratively with the Vivarium Facility Manager to ensure and maintain standards of animal health and welfare, quality control, and staff skill levels. Promotes high standards of animal welfare and ensures that any veterinary or potential welfare issues are addressed in an expedited and professional manner.

Responsibilities

  • Supports all aspects of maintaining laboratory animals in compliance with PHS Policy, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, AAALAC International and all local, state, and federal requirements.

  • Manages veterinary services equipment and inventory of technical supplies appropriate to census. Maintains procedure room supplies.

  • Works collaboratively with the Vivarium Facility Manager to ensure daily husbandry and welfare standards, including assisting with husbandry and cage changes.

  • Works collaboratively with the vivarium staff to ensure animal receipt and animal transfers.

  • Supports the quality assurance program to include animal health surveillance and monitoring of effectiveness of facility sanitation.

  • Implements standard operating procedures related to the animal health and veterinary care.

  • Assures all required documentation is maintained. This will include animal census, individual animal health records, surgical records, post-operative care records, animal orders and receipt, inventory management.

  • Coordinates occupational health and safety, emergency preparedness and response plans for animal welfare.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and Biological/Animal Science or related field required

  • 3-5 years experience and Providing veterinary technical services to rodent colonies, working with laboratory animal veterinarian, and providing scientific research support.

  • Must have a solid understanding of rodent barrier containment and management, animal care facilities and research procedures. Must possess knowledge of aseptic techniques, comprehensive anesthesia support and post-operative care.

    Knowledge of legislation, policy and guidelines is required.

  • RVT or LAT certification preferred
