THE CHILDRENS MERCY HOSPITAL Asst II Research in Kansas City, Missouri

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a research assistant appointment to conduct high quality basic research with close supervision of CMH clinician and UMKC faculty, Dr. Susana Chavez-Bueno. The laboratory work focuses on studying E. coli pathogenesis in newborn babies. The successful applicant will use established protocols in bacterial invasion and transcytosis of cultured epithelial cells and will apply current molecular biology methods to construct and confirm deletion mutants of pathogenic genes. The research assistant will pioneer, optimize and establish methods in areas such as electron and confocal microscopy, genomics, microbiome 16s sequencing, and screening of new pathogenic genes of an established library in a clinical strain. The research assistant is required to work independently and maintain effective communication with the supervisor and lab members, and contribute to managing the laboratory resources and complying with hospital and research regulations. Working collaborations include joint projects at CMH, UMKC, KUMed, K-State. The research assistant should be knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and motivated to be efficient, productive and work independently. Duties include routine growth, titer and storage of bacterial cultures of clinical strains isolated from bacteremic newborns BSL 2 organisms. Preparation of standard buffers and media. Bacterial DNA extraction and PCR, including gel electrophoresis and sample preparation for sequencing. Performing bacterial molecular cloning techniques. Tissue culture and maintenance of human epithelial cell lines. Assist Dr. Chavez-Bueno in the preparation of local and federal grants, contracts, posters, presentations, and publications associated with ongoing research efforts. Animal experiments in rodents. Database entry and management. Laboratory upkeep. JOB REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's Degree and 3-5 years' relevant research experience. B.S. or M.S. degree in microbiology or related field preferred. Strong skills in MS Excel, Powerpoint, good electronic record keeping skills.
