Under the direction of an Associate Supervisor, provide for the daily care of a variety of animal species to ensure compliance with animal welfare regulations. Assists in animal procedures such as physical examinations of newly received animals, restraint, and sample and/or data collection in accordance with GLP/GCP guidelines.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the routine husbandry and care of research animals including feeding, handling, cage and/or pen sanitation, daily observation of the animals for illness, injury, or unusual behavior (including pain and/or distress) and notifying the Attending Veterinarian (AV)/designee or supervisor as warranted.

  • Performs basic health program procedures such as vaccinations and administers therapeutic medicine as requested by the AV/designee.

  • Observes and documents daily temperature, humidity, ventilation, and lighting of animal facilities. Responsible for ensuring and/or performing housekeeping of assigned animal facilities and participates in the maintenance of buildings, equipment, and grounds at the site.

  • Monitors supply and equipment needs and notifies supervisor when resources are needed.

  • Performs other procedures such as building cleanup and disinfecting and reconditioning of cages, runs, and/or pens.

  • Inspects animal housing areas for sanitation and proper operation of mechanical equipment to ensure compliance with federal, state, and company guidelines.

  • Has a working knowledge of all other animal care technicians’ duties and ready and able to perform these duties when necessary including assistance with necropsies.

  • Familiar with study protocols of all research being done on site. Records study data in compliance with GCP/GLP guidelines.


  • BS degree from an accredited institution or equivalent training (One to three (1-3) years’ experience in clinical research, laboratory animal facilities, biological sciences or animal science).

  • AALAS certification a plus but not required.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects.

  • Effective communicator, good interpersonal skills, and ability to work effectively as a member of a team and in a regulated environment (GLP, GCP, USDA AWA, etc.).

  • Able to handle multiple tasks and projects under pressure.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. and work in a standing position for extended duration ( 2 hrs.) with periodic breaks.

  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
